Exiles is the only play by James Joyce, author of Ulysses, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Dubliners. In 1904, Joyce and his romantic partner Nora Barnacle left Ireland for mainland Europe, in part due to Joyce’s frustration with Irish censorship of his bold and sexually explicit work. Their children Giorgio and Lucia were born abroad, in Trieste, in 1905 and 1907, but James and Nora were not legally married until 1931. James’s letters to Nora (very NSFW link) provide an erotic and frank picture of an adventurous and exciting relationship. Joyce occasionally returned to Ireland until 1912, when he left for good. Exiles was written while Joyce was trying to get his short-story collection Dubliners published, and premiered as he was beginning work on his masterpiece, Ulysses.
The play deals with questions that haunt us still: Can you have love without possessiveness? What would it mean to be truly free in a relationship? Is it possible to have an affair with your own husband? Written as Ireland was grappling with questions of freedom and self-determination, in the lead-up to the Irish Civil War, the play asks how we can give each other liberty — or fail to.
The play takes place in Dublin,
in the summer of 1912.
